My micro lesson one was about wieghing objects using scales and allowing students to record their findings using SmartBoard or slide shows.
Assessing
Prior Knowledge and Planning Instruction:
What
do students need to know prior to the lesson?
Prior
to this lesson, students need to know how measurement works. They need to know
that there are different types of measurement. Students also need to know how
to use and read a scale. Students will also need to know how to manipulate a
SmartBoard or Slide Show in order to create their artifact.
How
will prior knowledge and experience be assessed?
The
students’ prior knowledge will be assessed through a hands-on activity. Essentially,
the teacher will be assessing the students through the whole lesson by watching,
asking questions, and observing the class as they work. At the end of the
lesson, students’ prior knowledge about the SmartBoard or Slide Show will be
assessed by their artifact that gets presented to the class and teacher.
How
will you use this information in the planning process?
I
will use this information in the planning process by making sure that
vocabulary is discussed and students are given ample opportunities to work with
the vocabulary and ideas.
Why
should the content of this lesson be taught at this grade level?
The
content of this lesson should be taught at this grade level because it
introduces the students to weight and how to use weight to describe things. It
also introduces the students to the uses of the SmartBoard since they are something
that most every classroom has and they will see through their schooling experience.
How
do the objectives that you have for the lesson align with the standards?
The
objectives that I have align with the standards in the idea that my objectives
state what I want my students to learn from the standard that I am teaching. My
standards align with the mathematic standards and so do my objectives. I also
have my ISTE standard that I want my students to meet.
When
will the lesson be taught in the course of the school year? Why?
This
lesson will be taught towards the third or fourth quarter of the school year.
This is because students in Kindergarten, students usually begin the year still
learning about what a number is and what I means. As the year goes on, they
start to learn that you can use those numbers for different things. The
students will need to be aware of this in order to be able to use numbers to
describe weight.
Designing
Instruction
Why
are you using instructional methods you have described?
I
used the instructional method of I do, we do, you do because it’s a good way to
get students interested, involved, and then independently working.
How
do the instructional methods align with what you know about best practices?
(think about your methods classes)
The
instructional method I used aligns with what I know about best practices
because I know that it is important to get your students involved and
interested in what you are teaching. If your students don’t feel important to
the lesson you will not achieve what you hope to with them.
How
are you engaging students in creative and higher order thinking?
I
am engaging my students in creative and higher order thinking by letting them
create their own end product. They are given few instructions and have to plan,
create, and present what they came up with.
Planning
Assessment
How
does the assessment align with the standards and objectives of this lesson?
The
assessment aligns with the standards and objectives of this lesson because
students must show their understanding of weight and SmartBoard use. Students
have to create, design, and explain their findings to the class through the
SmartBoard.
How
does the assessment demonstrate that the students have been successful in
learning the content?
The
assessment demonstrates that the students have been successful in learning the
content because they must describe and explain their findings. They must use
the correct vocabulary words and be able to navigate the SmartBoard or
presentation.
How
does the assessment demonstrate student engagement in higher order thinking?
The
assessment demonstrates student engagement in higher order thinking because
each students’ presentation will be unique and different. Students are not
given a format to follow, so they will show their creativeness and abilities in
their presentation.
How
does the assessment demonstrate that individual student needs were met?
The
assessment will demonstrate that individual student needs were met because each
student will have created their own assessment/artifact.
How does
your lesson meet each of the ISTE NETs Standards?
How
does your lesson meet Standard 2: Provide Digital-Age Learning Experiences and
Assessments?
In
most classrooms in today's world, there are SmartBoards, iPads, or some other
digital device that the teachers and students both have access to using. This
lesson met ISTE NET Standard 2 because it allows the students to use different
ideas in technology to create new experiences, such as the SmartBoard or a PowerPoint.
The students are also required to turn in their creations to the teacher
digitally to be graded and assessed.
How
does your lesson meet Standard 3: Model Digital-Age Work & Learning?
My
lesson was based towards Kindergarten students, so the use of a SmartBoard or
iPad would be ideal to teach this lesson. Again, in today's world, it seems
that almost every classroom has at least one of those technologies as an
option. With that, the use of those two technologies allowed my lesson to
meet ISTE NET Standard 3. Students were able to work with the technology and
learn while doing so.
How
does your lesson meet all four elements of Standard 4: Promote and Model
Digital Citizenship and Responsibility?
- My lesson, since it was
Kindergarten based, didn’t meet the first part of Standard 4
(advocating, modeling, and teaching safe, legal, and ethical use of
digital information and technology, including respect for copyright,
intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources) because
the students will not be using the internet to gain information.
- My lesson met the next element of
Standard 4 (addressing the diverse needs of all learner-centered
strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and
resources) because it is an in class only activity. The students will be
provided with the technology sources they need within the classroom. This eliminates
the need to have the sources at home, which some students may not have.
- My lesson met the third element of
Standard 4 (promoting and modeling digital etiquette and responsible social
interactions related to the use of technology and information) because the
teacher takes the time to show students how to use the technology. The students
are also aware that not everyone’s information will be the same depending
on how they looked at the different objects. The students will know that
they are to only talk nicely about everyone’s presentation and not put each
other down.
- My lesson can meet the last element
of Standard 4 (developing and modeling cultural understanding and global
awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using
digital-age communication and collaboration tools) by bringing in video chats
from other classrooms on campus.
